An update to the piece he wrote 4 years ago. Still as relevant, perhaps more so. When I turned 18 years old back in 95, I would never have conceived of the society we have today. Our approach to elections, to government, to communication between each other, is vastly different than what I was learning about and observing at that time. Some of it good, some definitely not so. The paranoia, the anger, rhetoric and blind nationalism is so much louder than it was 20+ years ago. I am by both nature and practice, an optimist. As such, I have seen many, many positive changes in the last twenty years, but these particular changes – they’re not for the better.

I chose the Shorter Whitman because of his work, "Song of Myself" and because of my self-deprecating sense of humor. I am under no illusion that I can write successful essays or poetry, but I have been known to write them anyway.
