Great essay by Jim Wright on the history of the labor struggles in the United States. Although he writes from a US perspective, you could repeat this for many other industrialized countries over the next 100 plus years. Why does the US buy so much from countries based in Asia? Because many of those countries don’t have the protections that the US, Canada, Mexico or Europe have in place. And it was Wall Street, corporate CEO’s and our government who made that transition from US production to overseas production happen, all in the name of profit.

The one thing Jim didn’t mention which I think we also need to talk about – Labor Day was signed into National Holiday existence by Grover Cleveland at the same time as he was sending forces to Chicago to bust up a labor dispute, killing a dozen plus people. Sleight of hand to distract people from what was really happening. Government only works if you hold it accountable and remember your history, otherwise it works for those that have all the money.

I chose the Shorter Whitman because of his work, "Song of Myself" and because of my self-deprecating sense of humor. I am under no illusion that I can write successful essays or poetry, but I have been known to write them anyway.
