There was a good movie several years ago called “Wag the Dog” and boy is it appropriate these days. Usually people refer to politicians engaging in this activity, but today you’re just as likely to see the news itself doing the wagging.

On one hand, I love the access to information that we have now, it allows for so much more accountability and can minimize the amount of “filters” that news goes through before reaching the public. On the other hand, it has also allowed people to more easily mislead each other by only seeking out things that agree with their view, disregarding anything else as fake or untrue. Human beings have always had issues being honest, but it is ironic and disheartening that in a world today where we can be more honest than ever, we have also created tools to be just the opposite.

I chose the Shorter Whitman because of his work, "Song of Myself" and because of my self-deprecating sense of humor. I am under no illusion that I can write successful essays or poetry, but I have been known to write them anyway.
